While nothing will ever beat the feel of a new book or that faint crackling you hear as you open it and start to turn the pages, the Kindle’s pretty awesome in its own right.
Just in general, the Kindle is a huge space saver and a money saver. $140 or even $190 might seem a little pricey at first, but consider this: If you’re an avid bookworm, do you really have the room to keep a bunch of books laying around? If you do, are you going to read all of those books often enough to deal with the space they’re taking up and the dust they collect (achoo!). With the kindle, however, you have a neat little device that can store up to a whopping 3500 books! I’ve also noticed that e-books tend to be a heckuva lot cheaper than physical books, especially hardcover ones.
Here’s some specifics.
Let’s take a look at the DX, first off. This is pretty much the ginormous version of the kindle released a few months ago. It comes with a bigger pricetag, but the display is much larger and can be rotated to view it in landscape format. So, if you’re looking at books with pictures in them, like detailed maps or scientific charts, this would be a good idea. If you could find your school textbooks for sale in PDF format, the Kindle DX would be a good choice!
Next we have the Kindle 3G. All Kindles come with wireless download capability (meaning you can download books on the go as long as you’re within the range of a wireless router) but the 3g also has, you guessed it, 3g capability. This means you can download books or magazines or whatever else from anywhere! There’s two different colors for this model, the black and the white.
And finally, we have the original Kindle with standard wireless and 3500 books worth of storage space. The cheapest of the 3, and all it’s missing is 3g. So, if you’re the type who’s often in range of their home internet and doesn’t generally get the sudden urge to read Harry Potter while you’re out camping, this will definitely suit you.
I did forget to mention one thing, though. The Kindle’s are not backlit. Kind of a bummer there, especially if you read at night. They do, however, sell lights that can either plug into the protective carrying case or into the Kindle its self.
Well, that’s all I got. I hope this has helped someone with their decision on whether or not to get one. Gotta say I love mine, though!
