Buying A Replacement Laptop Battery – Original or Compatible by W J Smith
As laptop users, we all wish that the laptop batteries will run for 24 hours and last a lifetime. They usually only tend tend to last for a few years. This also depends on how they are looked after. Usually these are made of Lithium Ion and some of the latest ones are made of Lithium Ion Polymer. This is the chemistry or chemical composition. The problem with Lithium Ion batteries is that it starts deteriorating immediately. A lot of laptop manufacturers like Acer, Dell, HP and Toshiba all mention that it is best to remove the laptop battery with about 40% charge and store it safely when the laptop is not going to be used for a very long period of time.
Buying a replacement battery is a straight forward process, but users are still confused by the sheer number of options that are available to them. There are original batteries made by the laptop manufacturers and then there are compatible versions made by other manufacturers. Usually these are priced lower than the originals.
The laptop battery you want to purchase should match your existing one. The make and model of your laptop will help select the correct battery. Also the voltage and current ratings, which are usually printed on the underside, will also help choose the right one for your laptop. Choosing a HP OmniBook battery instead ofHP Pavilion battery may not work and also it may not fit. Choosing a Toshiba laptop battery instead of Acer laptop battery will be disastrous. Providing the part numbers of your laptop and the battery to the seller should help in identifying the correct one as well. Always check the shape and size of the battery. If it is very different to the one you are currently using don’t use it or force it in to your laptop. Also, check that the battery chemistry is same. If the laptop battery is Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) but the new one is Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), then there is clearly a problem. Do not use it without checking the manual for your laptop and ask the seller for more information.
Branded laptop batteries are usually priced higher than compatible batteries. Manufacturers trade on the strength of the brand and give customers assurance. Dell batteries may be priced higher than a compatible version. There are many reputable compatible laptop batteries which use the same internal components. They provide the user with 1 year warranty and are cheaper than the original. The user can make huge savings when buying a compatible laptop battery. Be aware of extremely cheap batteries, where the price is too good to be true. It may be constructed with very cheap components. It may compromise the safety of the laptop battery and may not last long. Ask the seller for details and check the type of warranty offered. Many compatible laptop batteries have a higher capacity (this is the mAh rating printed on the battery). This means that the battery with the higher number will run for a longer time compared to a battery with a lower number.
Compatible laptop batteries are very useful when you are no longer able to purchase an original one. As manufacturers make older laptop models or series end of life and sourcing power accessories become very difficult. Some times manufacturers do not make extended capacity versions. They only make a battery with a specific capacity, while compatible versions may be available in various higher capacities. If you use a laptop all the time and are also on the move or travelling, having a spare battery might be a life saver. A compatible version will be very cost effective.
